FAQs

What training do osteopaths have to undergo?

Osteopaths are required to complete a four or five year degree course from one of the established osteopathic schools and colleges. Many subjects covered are similar to those at medical schools such as anatomy, physiology, neurology however osteopathy students work hands on from the first week of study. All practitioners are required to attend regular post graduate education programmes and be registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

What is the difference between an osteopath, chiropractor and a physiotherapist?

More recently the three have shared more and more in common. The most accurate answer is that we differ in our philosophies which makes our treatments different. From a patient's point of view an osteopath and a chiropractor are more likely to treat using a hands on treatment than a physiotherapist who emphasises the importance of specific exercise programmes. Osteopaths are likely to incorporate the health of other areas in relation to the chief complaint, focussing more on soft tissues and joints than chiropractors who focus mainly on how the spine can cause problems elsewhere. However the most important piece of advice is to go to a practitioner with a good reputation and who effects a significant improvement within a few treatments. Although symptoms can take a while to disappear if they have existed for a long time, consider finding another practitioner if you find yourself coming back week after week without any improvement.

What might osteopathic treatment be useful for?

See the 'What Osteopaths Treat’ page.

Do I need to be referred by my GP?

There is no need for a GP referral to see me. In the majority of instances I can treat patients at the The Therapy Room, but occasionally it may be necessary to refer you to your GP for further tests or evaluation before a diagnosis can be made or any treatment is undertaken.

How many treatments will I need?

Osteopaths do not tend to 'prescribe' a set number of treatments at the outset, but will assess at each appointment the impact that has been made and adjust accordingly. In most cases however, I will be able to give you an estimate of how long you might expect to have your symptoms and how long you may need treatment for to alleviate your problem. Some patients require only one appointment and go away with a condition happily resolved – in very different situations we have patients who receive regular treatment for long-term or chronic conditions, to help manage their pain.

Does osteopathic treatment hurt?

Osteopathic techniques range from very gentle soft tissue work to high velocity thrusts (HVT) to manipulate the positioning of your body. I will talk through different treatment options, and let you know if a treatment is likely to be uncomfortable, some people do not like the clicking of joints and others can love the sensation - it is not essential to click a joint for it to become more mobile so if you do not want a joint to be clicked it doesn’t have to be done. I will discuss techniques and treatment ideas with you and work together through the session, with your consent, to achieve the best clinical outcomes. If at any stage you feel uncomfortable or unsure you have the right to withdraw your consent for any techniques being performed.

What will happen during my appointment?

See our 'Treatment' page for details.

What should I wear?

You may be asked to undress to your underwear if you are happy to do so to aid the assessment of your condition, if you would rather wear running shorts and a vest or strappy top this is usually a viable alternative. If you are required to undress to your underwear then it is best to wear underwear that you will be comfortable in.

Can I have someone with me?

It is fine to bring a friend or family member with you. If you need someone to help you communicate clearly or understand me, it is very important that you organize someone to come with you who can fulfil that role. Please note, some of the questions in the initial consultations can be personal in nature.

Is the clinic accessible?

There is a small step/threshold coming into the property but treatment is close to the front door without further challenges. Please get in touch if you require further information.

How much does an appointment cost?

My prices can be found on both Treatment and Book Appointment. Please see any of those pages for details.

It is best to check with your insurance provider and policy to check that they cover treatment with osteopaths. I am registered with Cigna, Vitality Health, Aviva, Simply Health insurance companies. You may also want to check the excess on your policy before making the appointment.
